Did you know...
Tasting a wine

eye | nose | mouth

Visual examination is the first test which determines limpidity, transparency, shade, brilliance and intensity of the wine color.

Limpidity and transparency : Opaque, shady, hazy, crystal, perfect.

Limpidity examination is carried out by putting the glass between the eye and a light placed at the same level.
Wine must be limpid without hazes or trails which are signs of diseases.
Transparency examination is carried out by examining wine on a white background tipping the glass up.
Young wines are transparent, old wines lose their transparency.

1. Clear yellow, white pinot
2. Straw-colored, white sauvignon
3. Golden yellow, young chardonnay

4. Brass yellow, old chardonnay
5. Bronze yellow, old sauternes
6. Amber yellow, Xérès

Nuance : Crimson, dark red, ruby, purple, cherry, peony.

White wine shades go from almost colorless and clear yellow for a young wine to straw-colored, golden yellow, brass, bronze, amber for a mature or very old wine.
Rosé shades go from stain-white, salmon pink and very clear red for a young wine to pink with yellow shade and pale rosé for an old wine.
Red wine shades go from purplish for a very young wine, cherry red for 2 or 3 year-old wines which are not to keep, red with orange fringes for between 3 and 7 year-old wines to keep some time, to brown-red for great wines to keep a long time.

Brilliance : Matt, drab, dreary, bright, brilliant.

A wine with brilliance is considered as happy when a drab wine might be sad.

7. Purplish red, New season's wines
8. Ruby red, young Médoc
9. Cherry red, 5 years old Chinon

10. Crimson red, 10 years old Saint-Emilion
11. Tuilé red, 15 years old Barolo
12. Grenat red, 30 years old Bourgogne

Intensity : Light, bold, dark, deep, intense.

A too clear color shows a light wine you can keep a little while.
It can also mean a rainy year, an excessive yield, young vines, not enough ripe grapes or rotten grapes, a too short vating.
A dark color shows a fine wine or a wine with future.
It is the sign of a low yield with old vines and a successful vinification.
