Numerous Huberts ventured outside of France, such as Etienne
Hubert (1567-1614) from Orléans, who was the
physician of Henri IV. He learned Hebrew and Arabic in
order to go to Africa and learn about medical practices
there. The explorer and scholar, Charles Hubert (1837-1884),
was assassinated in Djebba. The meteorologist, Henry Hubert
(1879-1941), was a member of the "Académie des
Sciences Coloniales" (Academy of Colonial Sciences) who
produced geographical maps of: Dahomey, Guinea, Ivory Coast,
Sudan, the Upper Volta and Senegal. Armand Hubert
(1900-1980) was a missionary from Loire-Atlantique who was
sent to the vicarage of the Nile delta. He was
consecrated bishop of Saïs in Cairo in 1959...
...and an Interest in the Past
Other Huberts dedicated themselves to the study of ancient
documents. Théodore Hubert (1835-1904), born in
Bourges, was a cartographer and director of the Indre
archives. His son Eugène (1866-1940), who was
also a cartographer, succeeded him in directing the archives
which produced the "Revue Archéologique du Berry", an
archaeological revue.

A friend of Verlaine and a Minister of
Justice
Lucien Hubert (1868-1938) was a friend of Verlaine,
an administrator of the colonies, deputy and then
senator of Ardennes. Delegate from France to
the League of Nations, he became a Minister of
Justice in 1929.
