The attraction of distant lands...
Numerous Huberts ventured outside of France, such as Etienne Hubert (1567-1614) from Orléans, who was the physician of Henri IV. He learned Hebrew and Arabic in order to go to Africa and learn about medical practices there. The explorer and scholar, Charles Hubert (1837-1884), was assassinated in Djebba. The meteorologist, Henry Hubert (1879-1941), was a member of the "Académie des Sciences Coloniales" (Academy of Colonial Sciences) who produced geographical maps of: Dahomey, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Sudan, the Upper Volta and Senegal. Armand Hubert (1900-1980) was a missionary from Loire-Atlantique who was sent to the vicarage of the Nile delta.  He was consecrated bishop of Saïs in Cairo in 1959...

...and an Interest in the Past
Other Huberts dedicated themselves to the study of ancient documents. Théodore Hubert (1835-1904), born in Bourges, was a cartographer and director of the Indre archives. His son Eugène (1866-1940), who was also a cartographer, succeeded him in directing the archives which produced the "Revue Archéologique du Berry", an archaeological revue.
