A High Society Painter
Coming from a Protestant family which immigrated following
religious persecution, Matthys Neveu (1647-1721),
born in Leyden in Holland, had the opportunity of receiving
lessons from the best Dutch painters of his time.
He settled in Amsterdam where he found work in a local tax
office to support himself. During that time, he
produced numerous paintings representing gatherings of high
society people: concerts, costume balls, gamblers, etc.
His choice of subjects gave Matthys Neveu the reputation of
being a high society painter. However, it was more the
quality of the figures and the delicacy of the drawings
which generated the painter's success.

A Young Lady Neveu
At a time when artistic careers were generally the
prerogative of men, a young lady Neveu was
able to make herself known. Born in Paris in
the 17th century, this young woman painted
portraits of her family members or her father's
friends. Several art collectors noticed her
talent and encouraged her to continue her work
outside the family circle. She set herself up
as portrait painter. Admired for the accuracy with
which she captured her subjects' facial
expressions, Miss Neveu was accepted into the
Academy of Saint-Luc in 1751.
