Poitou-Charentes - the cradle of Romanesque art

The Poitou-Charentes region is one of the cradles of Romanesque art in the Western world.
In spite of the many losses, due to the ravages of time and human history, paintings from the 11th and 12th centuries can be seen in Poitiers and at many other sites in the Vienne and the Deux-Sevres.
The Gothic, classical and contemporary periods are also present at many sites in the region.

Saint-Savin - the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art

Saint-Savin Abbey and its 11th century frescos are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage.

Legend has it that it was founded by Charlemagne.
Many of the support and covering walls of this building were probably covered with paintings. Those that are left make up the largest collection of Romanesque paintings in France.
